National Skyline (CD)
NATIONAL SKYLINE is a duo featuring Jeff Dimpsey of HUM and Jeff Garber of CASTOR. Fusing an operatic art-pop-catharsis with an inspired elemental gospel, synth-driven heartbreak majesty, and gentle, aching dream-pop poetics, the soft-bombastic National Skyline offer seven epic tracks of dreamy guitarscaping and undulating melodies, painstakingly programmed electro-nuance and elastic rhythms. This shimmering web of sound and beats is adorned with Garber's boy-beautiful male vocals and stream-of-consciousness lyrics. A seismic/melodic haunting recalling modern acts like vocal-driven avant-pop-experimentalalists RADIOHEAD, epic-eighties-egocentrics ANTARTICA, indie-rock-smiths SUNNY DAY REAL ESTATE, and the blissfully huge, day-glo cut-and-paste weirdness of The FLAMING LIPS. With hints of classic albums like U2's "The Unforgettable Fire," The Police's "Ghost In the Machine," Talk Talk's ''The Colour Of Spring," The Cure's "Disintegration," and Tears For Fears' "The Hurting," these lads could get pegged as revivalist, but it's not eighties-retro, but the modern equivalent.

| Actually, this deserves 5 stars. The only problem is that there's only 7 songs on the thing. Really really really good. Seriously. Buy it. Now. | |
