These are echoes that fill the empty corners of life. Left from sight and mind for too long, these dark corners now stir with the haunted melody that is NATIONAL SKYLINE's This = Everything. Floating on broken beats and tranquil soundscapes, this melody sheds sparse light on the ghosts familiar to the crevices of everyone's minds. NATIONAL SKYLINE formed in the autumn of 1996 as Jeff Dimpsey (HUM) and Jeff Garber's (CASTOR) response to their post-rock pasts Soon thereafter, the duo created their self-titled, seven song debut built on tasteful sequencing, effected guitars, and Garber's sinewy vocals. After a two month summer tour, Skyline began work on the Exit Now CD EP. An undeniable departure from the self-titled release, the EP reflects a lighter side of Garber and Dimpsey's pop sensibility. As the summer saw it's last fleeting days, Garber and Dimpsey settled further in to their converted loft recording studio to begin work on This = Everything. Temporarily itinerant, Garber struggled with bouts of insomnia on the studio floors while sketching the album around fundamental drum sequences and an acoustic guitar. The lead off track, "Some Will Say", exhibits the manic attention given to these sequences while introducing Disintegration-esque guitar and bass lines that ebb and flow throughout This = Everything. Apparent in tracks such as "A Million Circles" and "A Day on the Beach" are chilling soundscapes that parallel ENO's synthesized exploration on the Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks and Music for Airports. Garber manages to fill the expansive song structures with sensual vocals that exude feelings both familiar and far-removed. For four months NATIONAL SKYLINE put everything on the line to create these ten songs. For the remainder of the year, they will tour the US extensively (as a full, five-piece line-up) filling souls wherever they go.
