Furnace Room Lullaby is even stronger and more impressive than her fine debut set, "The Virginian." Case cowrote all of the album's 12 songs, and the material strikes a more deeply personal note this time out. Case's vocals are superb from front to back, as smooth and fiery as good brandy, and her revolving circle of musicians are subtle and beautifully evocative, balancing sorrow and good times with an easy grace. Dozens of rock artists have wrung cheap laughs from the sound and feel of classic country, but Neko Case understands the honest emotions and working-class poetry Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton brought to their best music, and if her own take on such things is a bit different, "Furnace Room Lullaby" makes clear how deeply she cares for this music, and confirms her status as one of alt-country's strongest artists.

| First of all I admit I'm not much of a country music fan. With one exception. Patsy Cline. See I think some people are soufully talented and it doesn't really matter what kind of music they are singing. So I put Patsy up there with J.Joplin. Neko has that kind of soul too. A friend of mine who has this knack of finding cool music sent me a song off Neko's new album from a demo cd he got out of a music magazine. Neither one of us had any idea who Neko and her boyfriends were(cool band name by the way)and of course I had no idea it was country flavor. But when I heard her voice on "Twist the Knife" ...
she just blew me away. Listened to it over and over and started checking Neko out a little more. So happened she was coming to a little club here in Atlanta to play. So I had to go. It was intimate and cool and laid back. Neko got up there and helped set up the stage. Then all of a sudden went up to the microphone and wailed out her first song. And with that she hooked me for good. She's a sexy little girl too. And funny. I loved the way she flirted with this good looking guy standing near the stage...telling him she was so hot. Turns out he was her husband. Now thats cool. She mingled with the crowd after and was a real down to earth person. Don't miss her or her band. I bought both her albums and I have to admit the first one is just a little too country. But Furnace Room has the right stuff. Baby. | |
