There's a sadness in these songs that floats in from behind the music, hiding in the melody, convincing you that you're the one feeling all weepy. Don't be fooled - it's not you, it's them.

Neutral Milk Hotel, and more importantly singer and songwriter Jeff Mangum, have grasped the nostalgic, melancholic powers of melody with an ease that would turn Brian Wilson green. Like Wilson, Mangum sings of his lost childhood, albeit through surreal, foggy memories that recall the confusion as well as the innocence of the preteen years. Magnus' strength as a writer is that he doesn't work to make his words make sense, rather he lets the music make sense of them for you.

There's nothing left to say. A masterpiece.

Kara Insound - new york, NY, US
Indescribably moving and beautifully poignant. I wish I could personally hand a copy of this album to everyone I've ever loved. One of those rare albums that literally convince you life only exists the way it does within the minutes of those songs. Jeff Mangum is undeniably one of my three favorite songwriters ever. No, that's too subjective. He is one of the best songwriters ever. No one can express such overwhelming passion in such a despondent (and apposite) manner. This album will, without a doubt, break your soul. In the most appealing way possible. It's so amazingly sad and perfect and potent, it will leave you mesmerized.

Adrian Bordeeleau - Three Lakes, WI, USA
Transcendent. The only truly religious album I've ever heard. This is THE penultimate desert island disc. Mangum approaches the metaphysical with such a childlike zeal that one can hardly resist remaining a mere spectator. I've worn out one vinyl copy and am working on the second.

Wow. This album is a must have.

Taking Aristotle completely out of context, this is what he would say about this beautiful record: "Ah, when talking about substance you have the perfect example here, In the aeroplane over the sea, for substance is being in itself, being in autonomy, and this record has all the elements to describe this concept, since you don't need any other references when describing it, it's absolutely unique. In fact, you could argue that from this 40 minutes of music, all accidents (being in other) emerge. It's THAT good." Yep, Aristotle's hero was Jeff Mangum. So take his advice, he was a very cool guy. And the lyrics are simply wonderful.

For me N.M.H. is one of bands hard to compare with any other. Although their music can be named as fuzzy, neopsychodelic, postgrunge stuff, It's digging the own hole in open-minded music area. ... anyway, It's good to hear it.

death marches with vibrant images. if these lyrics don't bring up lovely pictures in your head, you have no creative soul.

Derrick Freeman - Chicago, , USA
If you look at an album as a proposed piece of art and music as a medium, if music is truly meant to inspire emotion and take you to a new place (no matter how simple or complex)...IMHO "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea" is the best album ever recorded! Hands down!

Andrew Tucker - Los Angeles, CA, USA
This album haunts my very existence. Yet, I always have to listen to it. From the power chords and childhood reminiscense of "The King of Carrot Flowers, Part 1" to the Celtic/Fuzz Bass anthem of the Untitled Track 10, this album will seep into your mind and never want to leave.

Bryce Katzman - Pittsburgh, PA, USA
Being a audiophile of many different tastes, I have listened to many of the "classic" albums of the Pre-Alterna/Punk era. Such wonderful artists as the Pixies, Fugazi, Smiths, Janes Addiction, Palace Brothers and many, many others.. This and the previous albums are most definitely the BEST ALBUM THUS FAR. The eclectic musical craftmanship, lyricism and presence is overwhelming. Evoking a great amount of emoiton as well imagery, you should shoot yourself (or gas attendants) if you do not BUY THIS ALBUM NOW!!!

Shane Beers - Lakewood, , USA
Having been given this album to listen to by a friend, I think that this may be the finest "gotta listen" I have been given. "The man loves to sing", my friend told me, and I find myself telling others that. Magnum certainly does, his voice tearing across the soundscape of guitar-rock mixed with horns and often distorted heavy drum backing. The songs, already lovely simply due to their magnificent wording, are given life with Magnum's efforts. If you purchase this album, which you should anyways, and keep it to yourself, you are an evil person. This album is an uplifting experience that must be passed to others.

chris williams - utopia, AE, USA
It seems unbelievable to me that mine is the sole review of this magnificent work- a synthesis of folk, punk, and avant, among others- high on emotion and creativity. The production is masterful, with segues from track to track, carrying intensity throughout; a nod to lo-fidelity adds much to the mix. Mangum's voice soars and sooths on command, tripping over itself only as needed- his prowess is well complemented by singing saw, flugelhorn, and mysterious tape loops, amidst not-so-standard 'backing' bass, drums, and Jeff's own acoustic or electric guitar. NMH is one of the few bands i have heard that meld the gentle and the forceful proficiently. Sometimes somber, sometimes hysterical, always intriguing- Aeroplane is a must own.
