It's like 1997 all over again! Elliott Smith was always at his best when covered by a thick wall of tape hiss. The lo-fi aesthetic perfectly embodied the way his songs fought with the ubiquitous demons of self (and never won). For my money, New Moon is the best Elliott Smith release since Either/Or. The producers deliberately avoided attempts to clean up or over-edit these recordings, allowing them to serve as a capsule of better times. Recommended on vinyl.
