2007, Kill Rock Stars
Arguably the most gifted songwriter of his generation, Smith produced a large body of work that includes five solo albums and a collection of songs completed before his death in 2003. This double CD contains twenty-four songs recorded between 1994 and 1997, a prolific time in Elliott's career, when he recorded his self-titled album and Either/Or. Like his other work, New Moon reflects the power of Smith's ability to integrate rich, melodic music with poetic, multi-layered lyrics.

Customer Reviews

Adrian BordeleauIt's like 1997 all over again! Elliott Smith was always at his best when covered by a thick wall of tape hiss. The lo-fi aesthetic perfectly embodied the way his songs fought with the ubiquitous demons of self (and never won). For my money, New Moon is the best Elliott Smith release since Either/Or. The producers deliberately avoided attempts to clean up or over-edit these recordings, allowing them to serve as a capsule of better times. Recommended on vinyl.
