VINYL FORMAT. Insound Staff Pick - 2008! Last seen under the gleeful guise of 2007's Grinderman, a no-nonsense rock 'n' roll excuse to head down to the basement and shout, now Nick Cave returns to his full time Bad Seeds co-conspirators for this release. "Grinderman was deliberately spare and the concepts were pretty simple," explains Cave. "With 'Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!' we allowed ourselves to get expansive." It picks up where Grinderman left off, filled with Stoogified electric guitar, driving beats, and Cave's literate, seductive, and firmly tongue-in-cheek lyrics.

| This album, and Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds in general, are awesome. The vinyl edition of this record however, is pretty poorly done.
If this is the same as the US pressing I picked up, You'll find the 2 discs are a 12" and 7". I thought this would be the album, plus a few bonus tracks on the 7", but instead, the 7" contains the albums last track More News From Nowhere, (which clearly did not fit on the 12";) inexplicably split up across both sides of the record.
I found it sort of irritating, flipping the record 3 times in quick succession to get through the album's last track, with More News being roughly faded down in mid song to split it between sides. If the way it's presented wasn't already an indication, there doesn't seem to have been much love in mastering the record for vinyl either.
Don't skip the album, but skip the format, you'd be much better off picking this one up on CD. | |
