2005, Man Recordings (Germany)
Brasília, revealed an equally energetic scene, with bands such as Plebe Rude -- strongly influenced by The Clash -- and Legião Urbana. This last group, a crossbreed of The Smiths and U2, became the biggest band in the country. Some of the bands from the São Paulo scene (such as Ira!, initially influenced by Gang of Four, and Titãs) managed to break out of the underground and were given contracts by large recording companies. Most of the other groups stayed in the post-punk ghetto until they disappeared, as did the actual ghetto, at the end of the decade. The musical references of não wave were international, but the lyrics were written in Portuguese, frequently with liberating, poetic and political content. The tracks compiled in this collection give a healthy overview of não wave, and even though what was documented in the studios was less explosive than the live experience, it is still intriguing to hear how current some of these tracks sound.
