2001, Frog Man Jake
Big Numbers was formed in the fall of 1999 by Alex Holden, Jeff Ledbetter,
and brothers Jeff & Nat Rabb, fulfilling the roles respectively of guitar, drums, bass and vocals plus more guitar. After a seemingly endless gestation period, the band played a handful of shows in New York and DC, then set about to record this, their debut EP. Recorded by AARON MULLAN at SONIC YOUTH's ECHO CAÑON studios and JERRY TEEL at his own FUNHOUSE, the EP was subsequently mastered and brought up to industry standard volume by WHARTON TIERS. Naturally, there are some obvious comparisons, such as THE EX, THE MONORCHID, and WIRE, and Mr.
Rabb's previous association with CANDY MACHINE might further explain their
stubborn insistence on repeating rhythmic figures and jarring guitar
discord. But ultimately BIG NUMBERS is the perfect sum of its parts, a lightning rod of liberty, loosing the shackles of tonal hegemony and shouting with joy.
