Numbers
A perfect inclusion in the skewed electro lineup of Oakland's Tigerbeat6 label, Numbers thrash the dancefloor by tangling the limbs of new wave, no wave, punk, disco, garage, and synth-pop.The San Francisco trio was formed in 2000 by vocalist and drummer Indra Dunis and two ex-Xerobot members: guitarist Dave Broekema and keyboardist Eric Landmark. The group's debut, Numbers Life, released on Tigerbeat6 in June of 2002, presents a band that's directly descended from Gang of Four and most closely related to labelmates Erase Errata ...[more]

This is good. Really good. Numbers are Eric (ex-Xerobot), Dave (ex-Xerobot), and Indra (also of Dynasty), a rock'n'roll trio formed in the fertile post-wealth, post-rave San Francisco dot-bomb underground. They play fast primal-punk disco beats, while trading detached boy/girl vocals back and forth amidst intermittent bursts of noisy guitar and fuzzed-out buzzerk bass. They cite influences (No Wave, Gang of Four, Kraftwerk, Wire) that sound typical enough, but Numbers chew these up and spit them back out i [ read more ]

RESTOCK. This trio has been whipping live audiences into a frenzy since the summer of 2000. Lead singer and drummer Indra Dunis lays down disco-punk beats a la GANG OF FOUR or DEVO that jack into your dance cortex. Dave Broekema whacks away at his Gibson SG making jagged No Wave skree along the lines of the CONTORTIONS. Eric Landmark's Moog and his homemade ?Buzzerk' synth machine pump out robotic bass and bleeps that would make both KRAFTWERK and ADULT proud. Lyrics about work, the proliferation of te [ read more ]

This collection of all-star remixes of Numbers' debut album, Life, is diverse, dynamic, downright rocking and enjoyable in a way remix albums seldom are. The remixers try to outdo each other either by improving on the originals or reinventing them by adding not just new rhythms and synthesizers but in many cases new vocals and completely new musical sections-- all faithfully inspired by the Numbers aesthetic. Highlights include: the full-throttle dance-rockabilly remix of "Driving Song," by recent Depeche [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. Numbers emerges from the dusk of last year's full-length, Now You Are This, with a pair of rollicking jams that refuse to let the summer set from our hearts and minds. "Is That Really True?" takes on the heavy question of real knowledge with a fuzz bass and drone organ before turning to an irresistible hum-along chorus. And prevailing question remains: "What can we know?" On the flip, the Tommy James and the Shondells classic "Crimson and Clover" experiences a fuzz rock reawakening shot [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. Numbers were once the premier party rock dance outfit, consisting of three individuals taking turns yelping, pushing and shoving, and coming together occasionally to make fight music for pajama parties. Now they've matured and evolved a singular sound; an epic, mind-driving sound. Constant and intense, but reassuring in the same way that record reviews mentioning Chrome, Neu, Can, Kraftwerk, Eno, Devo, Cheap Trick, Die Kreuzen, and Killdozer can be.
