2004, French Kiss
When The Apes first emerged from the the wet, miasmic swamps of Washington DC, they were charging rock and roll guerillas. Baroque keyboards crashed over the top of their driving rhythm section. In 2002 they released "The Fugue in the Fog" on French Kiss and toured once across Europe with Les Savy Fav and The Mars Volta and then again across the UK by themselves.
Before they started to write their new album, they were visited by a large green eyed insect. The insect bore gifts of new riffs. A new sound rode into Ape-town. Infused with the psychedelic sounds of San Francisco around 1967, the Apes continue to rock, but in a wyrd way. Erick Jackson's burning, fur-lined bass growls, Amanda Kleinman's horny and celestial organ howls like a banshee, Jeff Schmid plays drums with an iron-chest-of-cocaine and Paul Weil plays ring master to this circus of the surreal.
