2003, Rainbow Quartz
The Strawberry Smell, from France, contacted Rainbow Quartz as big fans of Cotton Mather, who they resemble in a richly exotic european way. They are a post-mod guitar band who use understated, tasteful organ and keyboards to add pastel-like hues to their extremely colorful and melodic harmony-laced jangle. The band (who of course sing in English) takes as a starting point a Beatlesy-Merseybeat then mix in fab psychedelia and an aggressive 21st Century guitar crunch throughout their glorious first album Odorama The Strawberry Smell cover a wide range of sounds that evoke pop at its finest a la The Apples, The Dentists and even the breathy harmonics of 10cc, with the song 'Balthazar' sounding like vintage Oasis. However, they have an intensity level that veers towards the darker palate of artists like Robyn Hitchcock, Magazine and The Monochrome Set -- but with their melodic sensibility intact.
