During the last three years Of Montreal have been on a tear: releasing 2004's Satanic Panic in the Attic and 2005's The Sunlandic Twins and spreading their dance party-inducing live shows to the masses. Now, of Montreal have created their masterpiece with Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer? It's an irresistible and remarkable album, sounding like a logical extension of the erratic indie-disco sounds of The Sunlandic Twins. However, Hissing Fauna is also the most personal of Montreal album to date, with Kevin Barnes, lead Of Montreal songwriter, pouring tremendous amounts of emotion, heartbreak, frustration and elation into its twelve tracks. Written and recorded primarily during what he calls "an insane year," Hissing Fauna sees Barnes adopt a new writing style. It's an unabashedly autobiographical attempt from a songwriter whose early material tended towards characters and story-songs. Barnes continues down the whimsical pop funk path, while changing up its lyrical scope; and Hissing Fauna balances its poppy nature while showcasing brutal and unflinching honesty. The vinyl version of Hissing Fauna is double 180-gram LP in a deluxe, triple-gatefold jacket w/ four bonus tracks.

User Reviews

Adrian Bordeleau - St. Louis, MO, USA
Dark, glammy disco-pop from a slightly schizophrenic lead character, "Hissing Fauna..." plays like a disillusioned and slightly more sinister cousin to the psychedelic innocence of Neutral Milk Hotel's "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea." Ten years its junior, "Hissing Fauna..." takes place in a post-9/11 world that is more complicated, more self-conscious, but no less sad. There is no metaphysical reprieve here, only a guy alone in his room making damn catchy disco-pop. This has to be album of the year.

An interesting new direction for Of Montreal, Hissing Fauna retains the impeccable, baroque production of previous albums but is their most stylistically unified and emotionally rich album yet. Their new, electro-synth-pop sound anchors a concept album of sorts, one that is rich and heartbreaking where previous albums were whimsical and playful. Maybe it lacks the sheer joyous invention of Satanic Panic in the Attic, but if that means we get the devastating nervous breakdown epic that is "The Past is a Grotesque Animal", it's a trade-off I'm willing to make. This is Of Montreal's masterpiece, and a gem of an album.

Although still quite early to declare these things - I do believe this album to be a strong contender for album of the year. An amazing mixture of glam, pop, and danceable synth-rock, you are sure to find yourself dancing possibly despite yourself but loving every minute. Highly recommended!
