2001, Tiger Style
INSOUND TOP SELLER OF 2001
The Album Leaf is the moniker under which Tristeza guitarist Jimmy LaValle explores musical ideas that do not fit into the scope of Tristeza. A member of such bellwether hardcore acts as Swing Kids, The Locust and Crimson Curse, Jimmy has been playing for quite some time. He released An Orchestrate Rise to Fall in early 2000 to rave reviews, followed it up with a full summer tour and has just released a CDEP/10" on Troubleman as part of their singer/songwriter series. A busy and talented man to say the least.
Recorded mostly at home and in the studio with Rafter Roberts, Jimmy played nearly every instrument on the record, wrote all the tracks and recorded 90% of it himself. One Day I'll Be On Time shows Jimmy at his most intimate and personal, highlighting his transition from seminal hardcore to instrumental poetry. The music ranges from extremely ambient guitar pieces to uptempo, danceable electronica and everything in between. Tons of keyboards, drum samples, thick basslines and acoustic guitar add layers upon layers to Jimmy's initial ideas. Lot's of open room recording gives the record a very sincere and genuine feel that is certainly present in The Album Leaf's live show. Despite its instrumental nature, these songs speak volumes about one's experiences through life.
Look for constant touring and recording to keep The Album Leaf busy for the remainder of 2001. A collaboration 7" series is in the works, setting The Album Leaf up with the likes of Bright Eyes and Her Space Holiday, to be released on Better Looking Records. Additionally, a full US tour is planned for this summer.
