Osborne
Based in Ypsilanti, MI, a town located between Ann Arbor and Detroit, producer/DJ Todd Osborn first gained notoriety outside his region as Soundmurderer, releasing hyper-intense ragga jungle productions on his Rewind label with partner SK-1 (Tadd Mullinix, aka Dabrye, James T. Cotton). The attention paid to Soundmurderer peaked with a mix for Violent Turd, 2003's Wired for Sound, which whipped through 60 tracks in less than 70 minutes. Techno and house releases credited to Todd Osborn and Osborne surfaced the previous year on labels like {@Thro...[more]

Osborne's Osborne is a celebration of all that is good in American house and techno music: past, present and future. There are lots of stories about DJ and producer Todd Osborn (no e, mind you). They are, unfortunately for your ego and ours, all true. Our lego-sculpting, electron microscope-owning, Japanese speaking uber-producer puts this joy of life and the art of making into his music. Todd fixes and flies planes, has fabricated a video game kiosk out of hospital equipment, and is finishing his ho [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. One of Ghostly International's compilation standout tracks "Wait A Minute" by Osborne is back by popular demand. The extended mix has an irresistible Rhodes-based hook and ubiquitous talkbox which noodles into Arto Mwambe's remix, which squishes the track's exuberance into an understated slice of handclap-house. On "Fire," Osborne spins scratchy lite-funk guitars and violins into an elegantly-arranged disco number. "The Count" closes things out with fat 'n dirty techno tones that are decidedly [ read more ]

Just as Ghostly International/[Adult Swim]'s 2008 Ghostly Swim compilation hits its smoldering peak, Osborne's "Wait a Minute" glides in, sprays stardust all over the proceedings, and sends the comp toward its cool-down conclusion. Osborne's ode to the joys of the talkbox was one of Ghostly Swim's clear standouts; now, "Wait a Minute" is back by popular demand, resurrected as the opening track of Osborne's Hovercrafting EP, the followup to his critically adored self-titled 2008 debut. The Afrika EP is Osborne's third release of new material on Spectral. The title track is one of the best songs we've had the pleasure to release. Full of life and atmosphere, it oozes all things raw and natural. Distant voices form a chant, and rolling drum lines are sequenced in a non-traditional grid. ?Afrika? is World-inspired without falling into cliche or comfort. It rolls out the speakers in a healthy charge.

Under his four-to-the-floor alias, Osborne, Todd creates classic house and techno for Ghostly International's Spectral Sound imprint. Occupying the space between jacking acid techno and piano-led house, Todd broke through with his ?Bout Ready to Jak? single which got club play from everyone from Richie Hawtin to Kompakt's Michael Mayer. This EP gathers reconstructions from some of our favorite producers, including our own Matthew Dear, Hieroglyphic Being and TNT (aka Todd Osborn and Tadd Mullinix), and [ read more ]

We know a summer soundtrack when we hear one. Giving a taste of his self-titled LP, Osborne has pared down the Ruling EP to his juiciest house tracks. The title cut is a beauty, anchored by vintage 909 snares and hi-hats, then lifted with an irresistible vocal melody; when the late afternoon sun filters in and the dance floor really lets its hair down, ?Ruling? is the clincher to reach for. Osborne goes even deeper with ?Downtown,? a bubbling, piano-propelled mover that's all handclaps an [ read more ]

Outta Sight is pure magic, slinking percussion, string pads and a that piano melody that recalls everything from Aphexian rhapsodies to lost Paradise Garage classics. First appearing as a hidden track on Ghostly's Idol Tryouts Two compilation, Outta Sight finally gets its proper due and just as the name says, its a new sound in its own right.
