Papa M
Known alternately as Papa M, Aerial M, M Is the Thirteenth Letter, and simply M, David Pajo has woven in and out of some of the most creative bands in the Midwest while working on his own innovative solo/side projects. He was a founding member of Slint, the Louisville-based slowcore band that wowed critics from 1987 to 1991. After they broke up, he played with a variety of bands, including the Palace Brothers...[more]

Papa M's latest opus certainly seems to be titled cheerily enough -- but once you get inside the belly of this beast, it'll seem a little different. Fans of M's previous, often-instrumental work will chill to the thrill of Papa piping in more than ever before. And when he sings, well, the effect of the words and the melodies is mournful, to say the least. It makes Smog look upbeat, believe it or not! Ah, there's a few little jokes here and there on "Whatever, Mortal" (beyond the title, that is) -- but even [ read more ]

And in this fashion, 2003 will pass into the books -- and you will receive a wealth of new Papa M music -- without ever ascending the mountain of full-length-itude that a new Papa M album necessitates. Fifth in Papa M's single series. "Five" is designed to give you something classic and new from the Papa M oeuvre. Recorded entirely in NYC, "Five" finds Papa M in gentle climes, duetting most dreamily with Christina Rosenvinge, evoking sound-clouds from his amplifier and slapping the cool ivory keys of a piano over the course of two intimate numbers. Whispers slide through the smoky late night air, cutting a path...straight to you. You lucky kid.

If you listen to some of the records David Pajo (aka Papa M) has appeared on, you might mistake Live From a Shark's Cage for someone else. After Slint, Tortoise, and a stint with Royal Trux, one might consider Pajo a guitar player known for his sharp, fuzzy, abrasive tone. This assumption would quickly be proven wrong. Live From a Sharks Cage is for the most part a subtle, slowly constructed work that comes to fruition in the same way hypnotist subdues a patient with the swinging of [ read more ]
