Pedro the Lion
After a shifting lineup, Pedro the Lion finally eventually became a one-man outfit. That man is David Bazan. A Seattle native, Bazan cut his teeth playing in hardcore bands before forming Pedro in 1995, taking the band's name from a character he made up for a possible children's book. Under the moniker of Pedro the Lion, Bazan creates melodic pop in the vein of Bedhead, Hayden, and Sebadoh, with a lyrical focus on relationships -- with both other people and God. Bazan also plays in the band Unwed Sailor with Johnathon Ford of {$Roadside M...[more]

Simply put, Pedro the Lion have made the album of their career. After the huge crossover success of 2002's 'Control,' it was only a matter of time before David Bazan and company would fully realize their potential swansong. Beautifully achieved, 'Achilles' Heel' is crafted as a scathing glance into the crosshairs of the American dream, a heartbreaking sketch of husbandhood, and ultimately an exploration of faith as told through eleven perfectly textured vignettes. As sonically mature as it is emotionally co [ read more ]

Seattle's PEDRO THE LION (aka David Bazan) deliver Control, the band's third full-length album, which follows up 2000's Winners Never Quit. This time around, Bazan has recruited the help of SELDOM's Casey Foubert to share the burden, resulting in a collection of songs which play darker, fuller, and sometimes much heavier than any of the band's previous releases. Control is the loose, raw tale of a hyper-modern marriage gone wrong. Wrapped inside the song more intricate and mat [ read more ]

Very quiet, distortion-free, melodic, and often uplifting music coupled with delicate vocals make this album very soothing and relaxing to listen to. This record unfortunately only has six tracks, but it seems like the shortness of the album adds to its effect. Good music to sleep to, or to just lie down and think. The album's most shining moments would probably come in "Lullaby," although they are all very well done. If you are into Joan of Arc, Ida, or bands of that sort, you would most definitel [ read more ]

David Bazan, the primary storyteller and frontman for PEDRO THE LION, has built a catalog of songs bearing his lyrically forthright, simplicity-as-strategy trademark. Recorded and mixed predominantly by David in his Seattle basement, with help engineering the drums from his pal Blake Wescott.

Pedro The Lion (AKA Seattle singer/songwriter David Bazan) doesn't really move forward on his 2000 Progress EP. The two new songs are two of his most depressing. "June 18, 1976" tells the story of a mother who, shortly after giving birth, jumps to her death; "April 6, 2039" tells of a depressing life that seems to have gone on too long. Both of these tracks were self-recorded, and the resulting sound is claustrophobic to the point of being spooky. The CD version of Progress includes two bo [ read more ]

Pedro the Lion's Dave Bazan is an observant Christian who wears his sins on his sleeve. Still, there's a sweetness about his outlook and journey on It's Hard to Find a Friend. The songs offer nice detail: he finds his girlfriend has ticket stubs to a movie she saw with someone, but not him; and he wishes he could become the disciplined person a friend is "for a few habit-forming years." There's some real grace and poetry in the lyrics, and the music is spare, simple, and hypnotic. Bazan seems to [ read more ]

The Only Reason I Feel Secure was recorded during two sessions at Casa Recording Studio in 1998 and 1999. In 1998, lead singer and guitarist David Bazan was backed by Nick Peterson on guitar and Blake Wescott on snare drum. In 1999, Bazan was accompanied by drummer Ben Brubaker and bassist Josh Golden. The band is clearly in Bazan's hands. His creative energy is the band's driving force, and his heartfelt vocal delivery is its strongest appeal. On "Criticism as Inspiration," th [ read more ]
