David Bazan, the primary storyteller and frontman for PEDRO THE LION, has built a catalog of songs bearing his lyrically forthright, simplicity-as-strategy trademark. Recorded and mixed predominantly by David in his Seattle basement, with help engineering the drums from his pal Blake Wescott.

i got into pedro about two summers ago when I worked at a bible camp in wisconsin. the guy who was in charge of doing curfew check would often sing us a song that he knew, usually mike knott or pedro the lion. so when I left camp I bought winners never quit at this obsure record shop in madison and I can never go back to whatever exsistance I had before I found this disc. it's not for the faint of heart if you really focus on what is being said, but well worth the 12.00 I paid for it and then some.

Great album. Buy it, you won't be sorry!

Hey Mitchell, can you say "asskisser"? I knew you could!

I've long been a fan of Pedro the Lion and all of David Bazan's work, such as unwed sailor and his work with damien jurado. Pedro is beauty in it's purest and most simple form. This particular album I would have to say is the most powerful lyric-wise and the most driving music-wise, not necessarily his best, but very close. thanks.

the first song i heard on this album was "never leave a job half done," which i downloaded in mp3 format. for about 3 weeks i would listen to it with no knowledge whatsoever of PTL. I loved the song, it was catchy, lively, and i half sung along to it, "blood stains on the carpet, blood stains on my hands, draa kaa laa la mmm aa haa mm,...La La La La... she all most ruined ev-ry thing." after listening to it 5 times the day i received it i felt a great need for a support group. bazan messed me up. while i recommend the album, i also advise against reading the lyrics for 2 to 3 weeks, ignorance is bliss-for a while at least. -"whoever conceals his sin is not wise, but whoever confesses it will prosper."-(somewhere in proverbs)

When I listen to an album like "Winners Never Quit", I like to turn out the lights, get knee-whockin' drunk, and think about my ex-lovers. It's the CD equivalent of Seasonal Affective Disorder, bringing on a winter of melancholy and lukewarm lament. This sort of music, with it's rueful guitars and vocal scrapings, get me into that sort of lowdown funk, where my floozing, sousing past shrinks up close. Only there's a problem with it's digestability, and it ain't the Evan Williams, neither. The problem is G-O-D. Almost every song is about God. There are a few great moments when David Bazan, aka Pedro the Lion, musters up very intense imagery about domestic abuse, murder, and (of course) heroin. But He looms over each track like a disapproving creative writing teacher. The worst part about it is Bazan's music really does illustrate a tragic story. It's perfect for reflecting on every glorious, wanton sin. In that context though, his boner for Christ is pretty creepy.

Allow me to be the first person outside America to enter this list of reviews. I bought the record in London a few days ago. Having listened to it a several numbers of time I'm left with only one word - respect!! A small manifest of genuis it is. Brilliant lyrics on "slow and steady ...". Soloprojects equals future. Say no more.

I have been a Pedro fan since they have come out on the original label "tooth and nail" and yes this band is certainly the greatest I have ever heard. I recommend that the next person who gets this one will be touched, not only in mind but in the heart....

Pedro has done it again. David Bazan is an unbelievably talented songwriter and I wish I could only get my point across so simply and yet so powerfully. I can't wait until Pedro the Lion comes to my town on the 24th. I love the music and can't get enough of the new cd.

chris ward - lynchburg, VA, USA
the album is great and i find dave to be just like God, i.e. properly basic. In that i mean that dave bazan is epistemically as basic as God. Yes, i do actually believe it. I have been doing my M.A. on it. If you enjoy this type of well thought music, check out MK ULTRA OR JOHN VANDERSLICE @ johnvanderslice.com. A question: do you think that all religions are equal, i.e. epistemically as valid as each? email and we will talk. good day

Yet another Pedro album to prove that David Bazan is a musical genuis. This album is darker and more diverse than other PTL sounds, but it's just awesome. Just goes to show why EVERYONE should be all about PTL. BUY IT!!! EVERYBODY- BUY THIS SUPERB ALBUM!!! Lyrics are phenominal as is the music. All I gotta say is... I LOVE DAVID BAZAN!!!

Kevin Hyder - Seattle!, WA, USA

I purchased the cd at the show in salt lake city when they played at kilbey court( which by the way was an excellent show) this cd is great in my opinion the best

Robert - San Diego, CA, USA
One word. Different. Wow I have had this album for a day and a half and have listened to it about seven times straight through. And it's pretty damn good, not as brilliant as past works but ground breaking musically and still same old beloved Pedro lyrically.

Colin Moore - Bountiful, UT, USA
I bought this c.d at Pedro's concert in Salt Lake. It is as beautiful as David's other albums.

   Bradley - , OH, USA
another masterpiece by david b. lyrical content is once again great - with deep and introspective lyrics david has not lost his writing skill....musically, this album goes where his prior albums have not - still filled with the laid-back, raw sound which PTL has made famous, some tracks ('A mind of her own' & 'never leave a job half done') have a very rock sound, which coupled with PTL's lyrics, provide for a new avenue....but david b. still rocks out with his raw, laid-back style, which his listener's love...great album...
