Pelican
The secretive instrumental art metal outfit Pelican was formed in Chicago by guitarists Trevor de Brauw and Laurent Lebec, as well as bassist Larry Herweg and his sibling drummer, Bryan. Owing a great debt to pioneering forefathers Neurosis and often compared to Boston's Isis, Pelican coincidentally also found a home at Isis mastermind Aaron Turner's Hydra Head Records. After making their debut with an eponymous four-song EP in 2003, Pelican expanded their epic, otherworldly trance-metal with 2003's critically acclaimed Australasia, fo...[more]

With their newest epic, Pelican bring on new levels of complexities to their already distinctive auditory stamp. Acoustic guitars take their place beside the group's traditional power-droning and awe-inspiring instrumental anthems. Whether this signals the end of the underground musical landscape as we know it, or the beginning of a new one is anyone's guess. Luckily, it rules either way. They've toured with Low, Tortoise, Isis, Mono, Cave In, Daughters, The Bronx, A.R.E., Weapons, US Maple, and more. "(Pel [ read more ]

Their third record is a series of (r)evolutionary instrumental ruminations on touring and the homogenous effects of globalization. Never content to remain stagnant over the course of their almost decade long career, 2009 finds Pelican has shifted gears once again! Their fourth full-length, What We All Come to Need is Pelican through and through and the apex of their creative aspirations. It is the album that straddles most confidently the fine line between adherence to roots and the mining of the unexplored. As punishing as it is calming, What We All Come to Need is Pelican at their most inspired and sonically [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. It is with immense reverence that Southern Lord Recordings presents the new vinyl EP Ephermeral from Chicago heavy rock instrumental icons Pelican. Their genre-defying sound and eagerness to explore new musical directions made them a obvious choice to join the Southern Lord roster. They fit perfectly alongside like-minded bands like Earth, Boris and Sunn 0))). Ephemeral was recorded at Red Room studios in Seattle, WA by Chris Common (These Arms Are Snakes drummer).
