Pianist/composer Peter Kater is known for his scores for television, film, and theater, as well as for his own recordings of light jazz and new age music. Born in Germany, Kater moved from Munich to New Jersey when he was four. He began piano lessons three years later and studied classical music until taking up rock & roll in his early teens. At the age of 18, Kater moved to Boulder, CO, where he played improvised music and lived for over a decade before moving to rural Virginia, where he built EarthSea Studios. The only problem with the R. Carlos Nakai/Peter Kater collaborations is that Kater's acoustic piano can become heavy-handed and self-serving. Such is the case with Natives. Nakai's breathy flutes are awesome and, as usual, give the disc ethereal qualities that might not be intentional. Nakai and Kater designed this set for meditation and centering. Migration seems almost capable of sweeping away any sense of trouble, and soothing out any fears. The music on the album is basically of an improvisational nature, with pianist Kater and flautist Nakai developing themes and ideas that were then fleshed out in the process of recording. Due to the use on various selections of a native American flute, an eagle bone whistle, the moxenio and pincullo flutes, a penny whistle, an oboe, and a duduk, this set appears to be quite exotic and potentially adventurous. Unfortunately, pianist Peter Kater's synthesizers and his apparent love for smooth jazz make all of the music sound quite predictable despite the interesting tone colors. The flutes and other instruments are merely props for the lightly funky, danceable, and rather innocuous music   [ read more ]

Through Windows and Walls is the umpteenth collaboration between R. Carlos Nakai and Peter Kater. It is, as expected, a set of classy, sensitive, and sensible arrangements. Kater's powerful keyboards play with, to, and around Nakai's supersonic flutes and whistles. The compositions are serene and soulful. Kater and Nakai are in total synergy and harmony, and reach listeners on several levels. This is great acoustic ambience. It will appeal to fans of Dean Evenson, {$Robert Tree Cody   [ read more ]

When the Discovery Channel commissioned Peter Kater to compose and perform the soundtrack for {#How the West was Lost}, he made some great decisions. He recruited R. Carlos Nakai, Joanne Shenandoah, the White Oak Singers, and other remarkable musicians to assist him. He created six and a half hours of deeply atmospheric music for the 13-hour documentary. How the West Was Lost, Vol. 2 is the second CD of this reverent music. Kater is certainly a talented individual and his capability gro   [ read more ]
