Pinback
While a rotating cast of instrumentalists find loose assembly under the Pinback name, the partnership of Armistead Burwell Smith IV and Rob Crow is at the heart of the some of the most complex, postmodern indie pop happening on the West Coast. In the first few days of 1998, Armistead Burwell Smith IV (of San Diego-based Three Mile Pilot) and Rob Crow (of Thingy and Heavy Vegetable) formed a part-time recording project under the name Pinback. The simple plan grew more involved while Three Mile Pilot took an indefinite hiatus and Crow put a numbe...[more]

Hailing from San Diego, Pinback is a band comprised of two principal players: Armistead Burwell Smith IV (Zach) and Rob Crow. Pinback started as a part-time endeavor back in 1998, when Zach's band 3 Mile Pilot went on an extended hiatus and Rob found time away from his other musical interests (mainly Thingy and Heavy Vegetable). After recording their self-titled debut, released by Ace Fu in 1999, Pinback became a fully realized project. The next few years saw an increase in Pinback activity. In 2000, Tree R [ read more ]

As with previous Pinback releases, the duo's propensity for thoughtful instrumentation and dense layering of melodies is remarkably unique and nothing short of beautiful. Every song on "Blue Screen Life" holds muted harmonies, hypnotic rhythms, and lush orchestration that subtly resonate long after one listen. The duo trades vocals with comfort, poise, and precision. Yet, despite all of the underlying complexities in Pinback's music, their songs somehow always seem sincere, honest, and simply dreamy. Blu [ read more ]

A brand-spanking-new five-song EP that runs nearly thirty minutes long. We've waited and waited and waited for this one and it was well worth it as Pinback gives us their best record yet. Just when you thought a great band couldn't get any better, they raise the bar with this. Amazing stuff. Includes the title track, the live favorite "Victorius D," new live favorite "Microtonic Wave," the ultra groovy "B," and the soul-filled instant classic "Grey - Machine."

In between a million other projects, Zach Smith (3 Mile Pilot) and Rob Crow (Heavy Vegetable, Physics, Thingy, Optiganally Yours) came together and released one of the most phenomenal albums of 1999. "Some Voices" is the next obvious step in the progression pop music has been making over the last ten years. Combining a love for bedroom pop and an interest in South East Asian rhythms, Pinback pull out all the stops for their most mature release to date. Recorded by Zach Smith and Rob Crow.

Autumn of the Seraphs pushes forward and upward. Its melodies are more dynamic and aggressive, while still gently pulling you back in again and again. Autumn of the Seraphs is for both rabbits and people, for good days and for ones where you should have stayed in bed. It's Pinback's best yet, and it's going to take you over.
