Hailing from San Diego, Pinback is a band comprised of two principal players: Armistead Burwell Smith IV (Zach) and Rob Crow. Pinback started as a part-time endeavor back in 1998, when Zach's band 3 Mile Pilot went on an extended hiatus and Rob found time away from his other musical interests (mainly Thingy and Heavy Vegetable). After recording their self-titled debut, released by Ace Fu in 1999, Pinback became a fully realized project. The next few years saw an increase in Pinback activity. In 2000, Tree Records released the EP "Some Voices," and Ace Fu released Pinback's second full-length, "Blue Screen Life," in 2001. Their next record, "Summer in Abaddon" was recorded by the duo in Zach's home studio over the course of 2003, and truly captures Pinback's essence. Although it may seem like gentle pop music at first encounter, its brilliance is slowly revealed upon repeated listens. Songs are buoyant and lively at times, melancholy and dark at others, and always resonate with an underlying intensity. Between two musicians, Pinback lays out beautiful melodies that are deceptively complex, layering sounds and instruments upon one another and trading contrasting vocal parts with ease.

User Reviews

Steven Anderson - Louisville, KY, USA
This review might be a little biased, because Pinback is my favorite band, but if the record weren?t perfect, I would still be able to recognize this. The thing is, it is perfect. And I don?t mean that they don?t mess up, what I mean is that every single note, ever single lyric, and every single detail is perfectly selected and used in mysteriously brilliant unison, creating what is arguably the best album ever. I say arguably only because there are other perfect albums out there, although they are also only by Pinback, and Systems Officer (the solo project of Pinback?s bassist, keyboardist, singer, etc. Armistead Burwell Smith the Fourth, or Zach, as he is called.) I waited anxiously for this album, after their last EP, Offcell, which along with every other of their records was perfect and impossibly good. I got it as soon I could, by downloading a leaked copy on the internet, and I have been listening to it constantly ever since. I have listened to it about 15 times and I like it more each time. I have stopped though, as I don?t want to get burnt out right away. There are no specific highlight of the CD, since it is all so good, but I can say that certain tracks do stick out. Probably the most catchy of all of them is the single, ?Fortress?, which has a strong and well defined chorus, which keeps your singing for days. The last track has a rather cryptic title: AFK, but is an incredible song, with a slow and sad fade out at the end, as per usual Pinback last track modus operandi, and a very interesting and different beginning. Rather than the usual Pinback sound, Zach screams in the Three Mile Pilot manor, which is something I have been waiting for for a long time, and there is a long of talking, and some discussion of a summer in Abbadon. The title of the album remains mysterious to me. I can?t really figure out what or where Abbadon is, but it sounds cool and mysterious. Other songs of interest include ?This Red Book? in which Rob Crow?s individually comes out strong, and the bridge sounds quite a bit like a Thingy Song rather than a Pinback song, and ?Soaked? and ?Sender? in which the Pinback singing style is slightly modified, adding a new sound to their arsenal. Overall this album is great. With another album under their belt, Pinback is securing their title for ?Best Band of all time past and present in every genre.? If they produce any more records this good, I will probably explode.
