Pinebender
The experimental three-piece of Pinebender originated in the Chicago suburbs in late 1997. With their minimal instrumentation that consists of Matt Clark (low guitars), Chris Hansen (guitar/vocals), and Stephen Howard (drums), a slow-paced but melodic tone of experimental indie resulted as the three-piece played around Chicago for the next two years. This trio from Chicago features Matt, bassist and co-conspirator in JOAN OF ARC, on guitar, along with Stephen on drums and Chris on vocals and other guitar. Combination of the dreamy bliss pop of "Loveless"-era My Bloody Valentine, the psychedelic guirar rock and vocal stylings of late Built to Spill, and the wall of guitar swirl ala early Swervedriver or Teenage Fan Club. An amazing sound that brings out the shoegazer in all of us. Recorded by Steve Albini of Shellac, folks.

Pinebender's latest album is a 48-minute celebration of impossible designs, love lost, and fond farewells to old vices and good friends. It finds the band landing beautiful combinations. The record's "balls"-heavy guitar cannonades are always balanced with astute dynamics. A sense of quietude offsets the bombast, leaving the song brewing with some threat of explosion, a direct (though most likely unaware) response to the oft-fey, post-post rock lineage. Highly recommended.

Pinebender's Working Nine To Wolf is its second release on Lovitt Records. It is the first recording made with the band's new line-up. After the departure of Matt Clark in 2002, Stephen Howard moved from behind the drums to take over on baritone guitar and Dennis Stacer joined the group, replacing Howard in the rhythm section.
