2004, Indus Sonica (UK)
REISSUE. Originally released in 1997 on che records more experimental off-shoot, 'i,'"popular mechanics" was piano magic's first album. It was recorded entirely at home in north london on 4 track and 8 track c46 cassette machines by founding members, glen johnson and dominic chennell, with the help of passing friends. "popular mechanics" was, they professed at the time, inspired part by the earlier albums of kraftwerk and part by the animated short films of the quay brothers. "popular mechanics" includes piano magic's first 2 single a-sides, "wrong french" and "wintersport" - both long since deleted. Piano magic went on to record numerous records on numerous record labels including rocket girl, 4ad and wurlitzer jukebox. Over 50 people have played on their records to date. Though virtually ignored in their home country, over the years they've amassed a sizeable, devout following in europe.
