2001, Matador
Introducing the 4th album (their 2nd in North America) from Munich's Couch, an inventive instrumental quartet as difficult to pigeonhole as they are easy to enjoy. Coming closely on the heels of the well-received Fantasy reissue LP/CD, Profane is a powerful, confident work that sets higher standards for this brilliant band, as well as everyone struggling to keep up with them. 'Post-rock' is a terrible category to put anyone into (least of all because it doesn't actually exist --- if we really were living in a post-rock era, many of us would need to find new jobs), but we sincerely doubt that any of Couch's supposed peers are capable of producing an album this incandescent, so fully realized. But they are welcome to try, we are powerless to stop them!
