2001, Sympathy For The Record Industry
Making good on their rallying cry of Power-Pop to the People THE EXCESSORIES gear up to release one scorcher of an album. Their infamous blend of pop (a la THE SHANGRILA's) and punk (a la early MUFFS) has already won over some of oh-so-cynical L.A.'s toughest audiences and critics alike. Their upbeat songs and bubbly stage demeanor prompted New Times/Glue Magazine scribe Jim Freek to rave "Fans of West Coast beach party movies, '60s girls groups, and all purpose powerpop should be on the lookout for a fab new band: THE EXCESSORIES. The cheekily named outfit plays a perfect mixture of punked-up, California pop ala THE FASTBACKS and NIKKI AND THE CORVETTES. The band was recently spotted performing with Coffee engaging in all sorts of goofy RICK NIELSON-like poses while Bruck, miniskirted and ponytailed looked the part of a hooky-playing schoolgirl on the verge of shoplifting a candy store". The band's 12 song debut, Pure Pop for Punk People, is a bounce-along/sing-along confectionary delight. From the infectious chanted chorus of "S-U-M-M-E-R" to the bratty "yeah, yeah, yeah's" of "She's a Whore" to the revved-up version of The Little Girls hit "The Earthquake Song". THE EXCESSORIES prove that power-pop once again can be loud, raucous, and a whole lotta fun! Born out of a conversation between Rich and Melanie, THE EXCESSORIES were formed out of their disappointment with the L.A. so-called power-pop scene. Long fans of '70s and '80s power chord and energy laced pop as well as that era's melodic punk sounds, they decided to form a band with that same sense of urgency, but this time with girls carrying the lead. Featuring Melanie Bruck (now Coffee), the relatively silent bassist of SLUTS FOR HIRE and THE ALTER EGOS on guitar and vocals, and legendary guitar slinger ex-TOMMYKNOCKERS/GIZMOS RICH COFFEE on (what else?) lead guitar, ex-REDD KROSS/SUPERKOOLS Janet Housden on bass and ex-NEUROTICS/COUNTDOWN's drummer Roy J. Morgan on drums. They set out to change the face of power-pop in the 2000's. Their tart but sugary-sweet recipe worked. Upon catching the band at a record store gig local rock critic/author Dan Epstein wrote: "Hellbent on reclaiming the music they love from the limp and humorless bands that currently dominate the power-pop world with great songs, explosive playing, and a well-honed sense of the absurd this two-girls-two-guys quartet is cut from the same cosmic cloth that brought us ROCK N' ROLL HIGH SCHOOL, CHEAP TRICK, and THE SHANGRI-LA's". Allying themselves with the other bands with a similar vision, THE EXCESSORIES began playing high profile shows with like-minded bands such as THE EYELINERS, BUCK, and TUULI in the year 2000, as well as being asked to fill the much coveted opening spot on Spaceland's New Years Eve Show with THE BELLRAYS. Already booked for slots at the 2001 Las Vegas Shakedown event, and the opening spot for THE RUBBER CITY REBELS reunion gig in L.A. along with releases in the U.S. and Europe, who knows what this year will bring? One thing is for certain though, NOTHING SUCCEEDS LIKE EXCESS!
