2000, Matador
The duo's second full-length release on their own Vague Terrain imprint is both an improvement and a disappointment. On the plus side, the material is oceans better production-wise, more thoughtfully arranged, and more fully developed. However, Matmos tend to let the schtick of let's-make-tracks-entirely-out-of-weird-noises get the better of their aesthetic judgement, and too much of Quasi-Objects ends up being little more than flat-falling justification for whoopie cushion samples, stretched banjos, and chopped-up voice. Still, more than a few tracks -- Cloth Mother/Wire Motherand Always Three Words among them -- are both sonically perplexing and engaging. ~ Sean Cooper, All Music Guide
