Quasi

ARTIST MAINARTIST INFORELATED ARTISTSLINKSREVIEWS

Portland, OR-based indie pop duo Quasi teamed singer/guitarist/keyboardist Sam Coomes and drummer Janet Weiss, who not only previously joined forces in the band Motorgoat but also married and divorced. After a 1993 split single with Bugskull, little was heard from Quasi until 1996, when the duo issued the Early Recordings collection. In 1997, Weiss joined Sleater-Kinney for their classic Dig Me Out album, but she also continued collaborating with Coomes, and that same year saw the release of the Quasi album R&B Transmogrification. Its 199...[more]

Chock full of fuzzy keyboards, aggressive drums and a lifetime's supply of dark humor, Quasi's Featuring Birds is the perfect blend of pop and pessimism. "Life is dull, life is grey/At its best it's just OK/But I'm happy to report/Life is also short" begins the sarcastically sublime "California," which invites the listener to hum along, even if the subject is quite morbid. Failed relationships, death, being "swallowed by the work machine," and pretty much every other ulcer-inducing worry is handled   [ read more ]

Giving the standard Roxichord feature a rest, Quasi have made a guitar album- slightly bluesy, slightly psyche, lots of rock. The sounds and lyrics and melodies and soul of this record feel like they have been made by people who want music to be more than a conversation; they want it to be a language all its own.

VINYL FORMAT. Quasi captures sounds that are powerful, unrepeatable, and unmistakably psychedelic. Producer Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, Sleater-Kinney) made the mixes powerful and unpredictable. He enhanced the swirling, layered, psyche feel. "When The Going Gets Dark" proves that all the blood, sweat, and tears were worthwhile.

Fifth full length form the band. This time around, the songs tend more towards "pissed off" than melancholy. Coome's lyrics vent steam at such irritations as orporate entertainment, mass idustry, and biotechnoloy, while expressing impatience and frustration with his fellow human beings and himself. Harmonies soar, synthesizers squawk and snarl at strategic moments, and by the end of the album the rowdy duo is proclaiming, "Rock and Roll Can Never Die" . How she finds enough time to split her duties between Sleater-Kinney and her side projects will remain a mystery, but Janet Weiss, along with ex-Heatmiser alum Sam Coomes has managed to subtly assemble yet another worthwhile album. Titled Field Studies, it's Quasi's fourth full-length effort. Stemming from the Portland, OR scene that brought us Elliott Smith, it is not surprising that Field is marked with harmonies and whispered vocals not unlike those found on Smith's own records   [ read more ]

For a two-piece band, Quasi sure does make a lot of noise. Their second CD, R&B Transmogrification, is filled with indie-pop gems buried under layers of textured sound, bringing to mind the best work of Up labelmates Built to Spill. Sam Coomes' nasal vocals, also reminiscent of Built to Spill's Doug Marsch, are often plaintive, but never dull. Using a heavily distorted "Rocksichord" -- an electronic keyboard invented to approximate the sound of a harpsichord -- as its central instrument, {   [ read more ]
