R. Carlos Nakai
Tucson-based multi-instrumentalist R. Carlos Nakai is a Native-American musician and cultural anthropologist of Navajo-Ute descent. Though he received classical training on the trumpet, his numerous recordings consist primarily of resonant solo performances of Native-American flute improvisations with a judicious use of synthesizers, chanting, and nature sounds. Nakai only occasionally features arrangements of traditional melodies from various tribes; instead, he is primarily concerned with creating original compositions that capture the essence of his heritage in highly pe...[more]

R. Carlos Nakai has been at the forefront of Native American artists since the mid- to late '80s (around the time of release of this CD). On Earth Spirit, his acoustic reveries are direct and true. Each of the 15 compositions comes from Nakai's heart and goes to listeners' hearts. Two of the compositions are for the "eagle's bone whistle," the others for the solo Native American flute. There are no extras or accompaniments. The only outside influences are for recording and amplification. This is an [ read more ]

R. Carlos Nakai is both gifted and prolific. Journeys, Vol. 3 is a 56 minute gathering of his acoustic flute atmospheres. His aggressive style is smooth and sweet. The Native American flute -- in this magician's hands -- sings like a chorus. There are no loops or layers or electronic instruments or devices. These soundscapes are Nakai's flutes and chants with amplification. This disc is definitively Native American but it would fit quite nicely in ambient, minimalist or space music collections. Nakai continues his collaboration with musicians outside the Native American tradition with this release. Amo Chip Dabney is a versatile multi-instrumentalist who brings a gentle jazz sensibility to Nakai's rich flute playing. With various saxophones, bass, and synthesizers, Dabney adds just the right touches of muted colors to these introspective pieces. He has played with artists as diverse as Sun Ra & His Omniverse Arkestra, Queen Ida, and O.J. Ekemode & the Nigerian All-Stars. He [ read more ]

Sundance Season is acoustic ambience of the highest order. The CD features R. Carlos Nakai on the Native American flute and chants. Stephen Hill (of Hearts of Space fame) recorded the album at the Lindisfarne Chapel in Crestone, CO, from July 10 to July 13, 1987. The only electric devices are the recording and amplifying equipment. The acoustics of the hall provide a subtle echo that "processes" the flute and voice. Nakai is one of the leading practitioners of this style. In his hands, [ read more ]
