R. Carlos Nakai
Tucson-based multi-instrumentalist R. Carlos Nakai is a Native-American musician and cultural anthropologist of Navajo-Ute descent. Though he received classical training on the trumpet, his numerous recordings consist primarily of resonant solo performances of Native-American flute improvisations with a judicious use of synthesizers, chanting, and nature sounds. Nakai only occasionally features arrangements of traditional melodies from various tribes; instead, he is primarily concerned with creating original compositions that capture the essence of his heritage in highly pe...[more]

Navajo flautist Carlos Nakai first collaborated with guitarist William Eaton on the haunting and panoramic album Carry the Gift. Here they turn their talents to reflective interpretations of traditional Christmas carols, with the self-penned "The First Snowfall" thrown in for good measure. In addition to guitar, William Eaton also plays lyre and harp-guitar (all of which he makes) which smoothly blend with Nakai's Native American flutes. The carols are used as a base for some liberal impro [ read more ]

Featuring recastings of past compositions, Inner Voices teams the haunting Native American flute of R. Carlos Nakai with the sumptuous yet delicate string arrangements of Billy Williams. It's an opportunity to hear Nakai in something of a different setting, and it's also a highly effective setting: his melodies thrive under the string treatments, and his playing throughout is meditative yet compelling. The overall tone of the album is pleasantly engaging, suitable for foreground listening as wel [ read more ]

R. Carlos Nakai has become more than a leading Native American musician; these days he's virtually a brand name. And this time around, he's especially ambitious, for Fourth World is nothing less than a symphony, backed by virtually a full orchestra, while his native flute soars like an eagle over the sound, an oasis of beauty and calm. But serenity has always been a hallmark of his music -- here it's simply offered in a slightly different setting, one that works magnificently, its grandeur muted, more [ read more ]

Nakai is joined by guitarist William Eaton in thirteen selections for Native American flute. The flute is accompanied by guitar, lyre, harp-guitar and synthesizer guitar, plus two selections for solo guitar. The panoramic harmonies of Eaton's guitars and haunting melodies of Nakai's flute conjure visions of the mesas, canyons and plains of the American West. ~ MusD, All Music Guide

Desert Dance is R. Carlos Nakai's response to his own Sundance Season. That CD is in homage to an existing ritual. This CD is Nakai's personal "ritual about the ever changing beauty of the San Luis Valley and the rain-laden sweep of clouds over Crestone and Lindisfarne." This deeply spiritual statement is a complete improvisation that Nakai performed at the Lindisfarne Chapel in Colorado. His acoustic flute, guttural chants, and deep drums bring the soul to new heights. This blessed event wil [ read more ]
