ARTIST MAINARTIST INFORELATED ARTISTSLINKSREVIEWS

Named after a P.I.L. song, Radio 4 revives the late-'70s/early-'80s post-punk of bands like Gang of Four, Mission of Burma, and P.I.L. by matching scratchy guitar riffs with danceable grooves. The band was formed in 1999 in New York City by bassist Anthony Roman, guitarist Tommy Williams, drummer Greg Collins, percussionist P.J. O'Connor, and keyboardist Gerard Garone, and quickly recorded a three-song EP for New Jersey's Gern Blandsten label. Their 2000 debut, The New Song and Dance, produced by Tim O'Heir, entered Radio 4 into the ...[more]

Radio 4 returns with their sophomore album, "Gotham." While sticking with the melodic sensibility that made their debut, "New Song and Dance," a favorite among fans of anthemic post-punk, the band find themselves with a far more rhythmically aware record, ready-made for dance floors or basements. The band urges you to snap out of the '90s-boom-years-daze and realize that everything is not all right, all to the sound of loping bass lines, scratchy guitars, and throbbing beats. Radio 4 take their cues from the late '70s/early '80s post-punk scene (think Au Pairs, Gang of Four, Mission of Burma, The Cure) and combine it with a modern dose of inspiration and style. The music is edgy, melodic, and danceable all at once. Produced by Tim O'Heir (Sebadoh, Buffalo Tom, J. Mascis), "The New Song and Dance" has "...a casually authoritative grasp on Clashy dub-inflected punk, an echoing trill that could be mistaken for Gang of Four or Wire, and a hell of a way with a melody."

On the heels of their The New Song and Dance LP, this four-song effort from Long Island's Radio 4 is a continuation of their mod rock versus the Clash style of rock & roll, and a damn fine continuation at that. Sounding a great deal like the Combat Rock-era efforts of Joe Strummer and company both musically and vocally, Radio 4 is saved from just being adoring fans and instead pull off the chunky rock with believable skill and creative energy. Singer and bassist Anthony Roman,    [ read more ]
