Straight out of Brooklyn, NY, the sophomore offering from Radio 4 is more of the same, but the same is pretty amazing. The group draws constant comparisons to Gang of Four, Mission of Burma, and the Clash, all of which are merited, but that doesn't change the fact that their mildly derisive sound is pulled off with impeccable taste and well-realized songwriting. In title and subject matter, Gotham! is a tribute to the pre-9/11 New York City -- a celebration of the people and the parties, and the vibe is believably strong throughout. From the jumpy opening of "Our Town" to the record's jittery finale, this trio never lets up on the grooves and wild percussive rhythms that have more than a touch of world music in them. Adding to the magic this time around is the amazing production of Tim Goldsworthy and James Murphy, whose past work with Trans Am and U.N.K.L.E. gives a good hint at their capabilities. Half dance party, half political rally, Gotham! is a rock record for a new era. Radio 4 may have their heads in the past, but the music is still decidedly forward-thinking and it puts the group at the top of their class in the rebirth of rock. ~ Peter J. D'Angelo, All Music Guide
