Red House Painters
Red House Painters was primarily the vehicle of singer/songwriter Mark Kozelek, an evocative, compelling performer of rare emotional intensity. Like Mark Eitzel of American Music Club, to whose work the Painters were invariably compared and to whom their early success owed a tremendous debt, Kozelek laid his soul bare on record, conjuring harrowingly acute tales of pain, despair, and loss; unlike Eitzel, Nick Drake, and other poets of decay, Kozelek's autobiographical songs walked their tightrope without a net -- forsaking the safety offered by metap...[more]

The success of the "Songs for Blue Guitar" album in 1997, and the "Retrospective" double CD on 4AD, has expanded Red House Painters' audience and underlined their importance and influence. The last album the band recorded for 4AD, "Ocean Beach," has been unavailable domestically since 1997. Now available, this reissue contains some of the classic tracks including "San Geronimo" and "Summer Dress."

After years on the shelf due to Mark Kozelek's drawn-out problems with Supreme and Island, the Red House Painters' long-awaited Old Ramon finally sees the light of day, thanks to Sub Pop. As it stands, the label needs Kozelek as much as he needs them -- after a few years' worth of disappointing releases from garage rock revivalists, Old Ramon breaks Sub Pop's losing streak. Ironically, the album's long-delayed release only makes its joyous sound that much more refreshing; its inviting mix of gentle and fuzz [ read more ]

Four albums and one EP comprise the beautiful, slow, hypnotic, and powerful sounds of San Francisco's Red House Painters. This double-CD set features a retrospective CD of the band's years with 4AD and a second CD of demos, outtakes, and live versions. More than make the case for Kozelek as one of the great singer/songwriters of his generation. The first disc covers LP tracks and includes such jaw-droppers as "Grace Cathedral Park," "New Jersey," "Medicine Bottle," Kozelek's painful ode to dying love, and " [ read more ]

The second of two self-titled 1993 efforts, this Red House Painters collects the remaining tracks from the remarkably fruitful sessions which also launched the earlier, superior album. Far more experimental in nature, it opens with "Evil," an almost painfully slow and withdrawn song which acutely sets the album's haunting, dark tone. While not everything works -- the electric version of "New Jersey" pales in comparison to the previous set's acoustic rendition, while the cover of {$Simon and Garfunk [ read more ]

The band's debut finds singer/songwriter Mark Kozelek picking up where people like Tim Buckley and Nick Drake left off, combining delicate, folky melodies with ambitious song structures and no small amount of alienation. The band also bears a debt to the American Music Club in more ways than one. AMC's Mark Eitzel helped secure the Painters their first record deal with 4AD, and "Down Colorful Hill" sounds like nothing so much as a scaled-down version of American Music Club's fractured folk-rock desolation. Before "Songs for a Blue Guitar" could appear, the Red House Painters' singer/songwriter/guitarist Mark Kozelek had to leave his old label 4AD (allegedly over a Kozelek solo album 4AD rejected), split up the band, and find a new home for his music on Supreme Recordings. Fortunately for Kozelek and his audience, it's worth all the tumult. The deep beauty and eclecticism on "Songs for a Blue Guitar" make it another artistic triumph for the Red House Painters.

Though the two are separated by only a year, Red House Painters ups the group's ante considerably from "Down Colorful Hill." Many of the songs are more concisely written, the arrangements are more fully realized, and there's a greater dynamic range. The agenda remains largely the same though; Mark Kozelek still sounds like someone who needs to be watched closely around sharp objects, and bleak, dreamy folk-rock is still the name of the game. Romantic dejection is a favorite topic, unflinchingly documented o [ read more ]
