Retsin
Tara Jane O'Neil met Cynthia Nelson in 1993, when their respective bands (Rodan, Ruby Falls) were embarking on their first sets of extended national tours. Sharing a love of simple home recording techniques and melodic indie rock, the two became romantically and musically involved in 1994, collaborating as Retsin while retaining membership in their other bands, as well as participating in a number of varied projects and acting in the independent feature film {#Half-Cocked}. The following year, the duo signed to the staunchly independent Simple Machines label,...[more]

Retsin is Tara Jane O'Neil (Rodan as well as solo efforts) and Cynthia Nelson (Naysayer and Ruby Falls). Home recording techniques that Tara Jane O'Neil honed in the making of her debut solo record, "The Naysayer," and Karla Schickele's (Ida) solo debut, came in handy in capturing the acoustic beauty of old guitars, banjos, and violins reverberating off the A-frame wood ceilings. Actual insect choruses appear, along with the occasional four-wheel drive crossing the bridge, and drop-in guests (Liz Mitch [ read more ]

Perhaps it was the pigeonholing of Retsin as a side-project that allowed the duo formed by Cynthia Nelson and Tara Jane O'Neil frequently overlooked during its seven year existence. But if you follow underground music, it won't be hard for you to place Retsin as an honorable mention among the bundle of unplugged or semi-unplugged Americans citing folk and country music as main influences. Although they do share references with bands such as Freakwater, Cat Power, Mary Timony or Edith Frost. Tara Jane O'Ne [ read more ]

Sweet Luck of Amaryllis takes Retsin's sound from minimal, low-fi territory into truly gorgeous and well-polished areas; the duo's use of shimmering electric guitars (and more percussion than previous releases) almost merits the "slowcore" tag, with its instrumental constructions alternately provoking references to Tsunami, a more earthy version of Low or the quieter moments of New Radiant Storm King's Hurricane Necklace. Sweet Luck... also tends to rely on complex and appealing pop son [ read more ]

Egg Fusion finds Retsin's voice as a sort of singer/songwriter acoustic duo for experimentalists -- the album carefully avoids the most typically emotive two-girl-with-acoustic-guitars sounds in favor of an odd low-fi tone that even manages to drop into the occasional drone ("Hottie Titmouse"). This approach to sound tends to make up for the flaws in the duo's songwriting -- while their later releases have a polished loveliness that Egg Fusion doesn't really attempt, the album sports enough unusual construc [ read more ]

Retsin's eight-song debut disc on Simple Machines Records, Salt Lick, introduced the indie rock world to the dramatic pairing of Cynthia Lynn Nelson and Tara Jane O'Neil. The atmospheric opening track, "Hybrid Ice Princess," is followed by the straightforward and colorful "Mary B." On "Pulp," the duo favors a stripped-down lo-fi sound, intricately offering up minimalist guitar and soft-spoken lyrics. An earnest and sophisticated sound emerges as the disc nears its end.
