Rich Johnson
Born in St. Paul, MN, I began playing trumpet at the age of ten. In the mid-nineties, inspired by Kenneth Gaburo, Don Cherry, Low, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Iannis Xenakis, and Morton Feldman, I started to see new opportunities in music. Moving to NYC to attend Manhattan School of Music, I began to pursue the goal of creating sound that transcends the idea of style or genre. Currently I manage, compose for and perform in four of my own ensembles: Northern Spy (solo trumpet-electronics), Ignite a Noise Trumpet Trio, Ignite a Noise Brass Quartet, and We Can Build You (electroacoustic trio), all of which possess their own distinct identity. I am also a member of the avant-chamber-pop group Opsvik & Jennings.
