1995, K Records
Ridin' Shotgun finds Dub Narcotic Sound System entrenched in their percussion-heavy world of beats and Calvin Johnson's dry and seductive vocals. The title track begins with Johnson lamenting Hey friend, do us both a favor/No parking on the dancefloor. The song eventually rides out a deep groove with Johnson's vocals giving dancefloor narration throughout. Harvester Traveler is a rousing, beat-driven track with Johnson's echoing vocals stepping in at opportune intervals. Half Life features Johnson's best vocals on the disc. His vocal delivery on the song is crisp and precise. The disc ends with Ridin' Shotgun (Remix), a funkier and jazzier version of the opening track. In actuality, the Ridin' Shotgun EP serves as one long song, with each song flowing seamlessly into another. The album was recorded with William C. Brown III at Royal Recording Studios in Memphis, TN. K Records released the six-song EP in 1995. ~ Stephen Cramer, All Music Guide
