Under The Blacklight, Rilo Kiley's fourth album and their first for Warner Bros, was recorded in Los Angeles in fall/winter 2006 and winter 2007, and is the band at their most robust and dazzling. With the blood of Fleetwood Mac, early Heart and The Rolling Stones' 1978 dancefloor masterpiece "Miss You" pumping through its veins, Under The Blacklight is a gloriously decadent-sounding album, smooth dance beats balanced by the underlying lyrical motifs of the seedier side of Los Angeles life; the characters in the songs embroiled in everything from drunken one night stands to the sex industry. The album's lyrical theme is of the darker side of life as revealed by a nightclub blacklight, each song's character sharpened to a precise focus by Lewis' unique, undeniable approach. In many ways Under The Blacklight is a classic Californian love child and Rilo Kiley its ardent and vivacious young parents.

User Reviews

The newest installment to the Rilo Kiley collection is quite different from past releases but that's not to say it isn't as good or better. Their 5th debut album and their first on a major record label, Interscope, created much hype in magazines and internet bloggers. This album has lived up to all its expectations. With clear influences from Fleetwood Mac and catchy grooves, you can't go wrong with this album. It's the perfect soundtrack for a road trip or just to kick back and relax. This album is guaranteed to keep you listening even if you're new to Rilo Kiley, or a zealot.
