2010, Brassland Records
Brooklyn-based Buke and Gass (pronounced Byook and Gace) are Arone Dyer on the "buke" (a six-string baritone ukulele) and Aron Sanchez on the "gass" (a guitar-bass hybrid). Both members also mobilize a small army of foot percussion, filtering the result through various pedals, amplifiers and homemade inventions while Arone's supermelodic vocal lines weave through the beautiful yet unwieldy musical matter. It's a surprisingly complex sound for two people - and all the invention and musical multi-tasking makes for live shows that are visually unexpected and sonically explosive. In 2009, Brassland co-founders Aaron and Bryce Dessner of The National (well, technically, their sister) discovered the band when they played Sycamore, the basement venue down the street from The National's home studio and most of their residences in Ditmas Park, Brooklyn. They were blown away at how much noise and rhythm was emerging from this two piece band and Arone Dyer's soaring, inspiring, untamed voice.
