Robyn is already being called this years Annie, but you might recall this girl has been around. This time however, she's doing it on her own terms with her own label. In case you need a refresher course...Robyn A Swedish pop star who blends the gritty sound of American urban R&B with the sunny pop of her homeland, Robyn found a hit with "Do You Know (What It Takes)," which hit the Top Ten around the world including the U.S.. Born Robyn Carlsson in Stockholm in 1979, she traveled around the continent with her parents' traveling theatre group, also listening to classic American soul on the hi-fi. After writing her first song at the age of 11 when her parents divorced, Robyn got her break when national talent Meja heard her singing during a concert intermission. Meja got her a record contract with Sweden's Richochet Records, which released her first hit single "Do You Really Want Me." Though she was still only 16, Robyn began recording her debut album in 1995, and Robyn Is Here quickly topped the Swedish charts. - All Music Guide

?You could name those until you die!? - So said a friend of mine when I tried to explain the greatness of Robyn's self-titled fourth album. I had made the mistake of starting my description of her as a ''pretty blonde pop singer.'' My friend isn't wrong; there are a crazy amount of female pop singers with blonde hair and most of them aren't really any more effort than it takes to look at them. Robyn sounds like she knows it as well and on her first independently produced and released album, she makes a valiant effort to break away and make herself a unique voice in an already overfull genre. The typical game played by a pop singer has already been played by Robyn, who first got hits in the late 90s. But when her major label deal expired, she decided not to renew the contract and form Konichiwa Records. Her latest album is a celebration of her independence and her desire to stretch herself in ways that she wasn't able to before. - That Robyn does so well is creating a palpable level of intimacy in almost every song on the record, in spite the hefty amount of sass she also injects. ''Handle Me'' features the Rikki Lake ready lyrics, ''Let me tell you how it be / You won't get with this you see'' and yet, thanks to a well placed cello, sounds almost mournful, like she really wants to ''get with'' the already well sought-after guy in the song but something is holding her back. - If there is a flaw to the record, it might be in the extremes she goes to. One moment, she has the braggadocio to declare, ''I'm only sexy when I say it's OK'' and then stabs you in the heart with the breakdown of ''Be Mine!'' (''You look happy / and that's great / I just miss you / that's all). The record ends with three of the more mellow and downright heartbreaking ballads on the record. As great as they are, they do bring the momentum of the record down from it's excellent first half. - Still, what really shows through in the record is Robyn's own sense of fun. You get the impression that she made this record not to prove anything or make any grand statement, but because she wanted to make it so. It's no surprise that you can almost hear her cry as she says ''I love you'' at the end of the album closer, ''Anytime You Like'', because you can hear he smile as she rips through the so-fun-it-can't-be-bad, ''Konichiwa Bitches''. Because of that, Robyn is one of the best albums of 2005.
