Rose Melberg is indie pop royalty. Beginning in 1992, the diminutive singer/songwriter began a streak of classic bands and recordings. First was the riot pop band Tiger Trap, formed in Sacramento, CA, in 1992 by Melberg, singer/guitarist Angela Loy, bassist Jen Braun, and drummer Heather Dunn. They released two singles, an EP, and an influential self-titled LP before splitting in December of 1993. Melberg picked up the pieces and, after relocating to Portland, teamed up with Crimpshrine guitarist Paul Curran and Henry's Dress drummer (and fu...[more]

The songs of Rose Melberg belong to her voice; its stark stillness is as hauntingly playful and familiar as the first days of fall. Similar to her work with previous bands Tiger Trap and The Softies, her approach is always tender and hushed. Homemade Ship is a small masterpiece. Melberg uses just a guitar and vocals on the album (with occasional harmony vocal and piano work provided by Larissa Loyva of The Choir Practice and P:ano), offering helpful and insightfully delicate lyrics to perfectly ease    [ read more ]

Rose Melberg has always been a productive overachiever - giving us a seemingly endless avalanche of mellifluous albums to treasure - but the past 5 years have been uncharacteristically quiet. After moving to a small Canadian lakeside town, she started a family, developed into a mature singer/songwriter akin to Nick Drake, Tracey Thorn, Elliott Smith and Isobel Campbell/Belle & Sebastian, and created her solo masterpiece, "Cast Away the Clouds", the spellbinding continuation of an impressive career. Even in light of the uniform brilliance of Rose Melberg's past work with Tiger Trap and the Softies, her solo debut is still revelatory -- never before has her voice been so disarmingly honest and vulnerable as it is on these starkly beautiful single sides, studio demos, and home recordings. Despite its patchwork origins, Portola is remarkably consistent, split evenly between original material and cover songs, it distills Melberg's distinctive vision to its purest form. Rose Melberg's name on a record usually means two things: sweet-as-pie vocals and twee-as-pie songs. A long career of providing both with the Softies, Tiger Trap, Gaze, and now under her own name has led fans to count on her, and 2009's Homemade Ship album provides exactly what you would expect on both counts. Taking a step back from the slightly slick production of 2006's Cast Away the Clouds (which featured drums and a more polished production style), the record is very intimate and rela   [ read more ]
