2005, Brassland
The second album by The National will give you exactly what the title says, so no letdown there (unlike obviously all the relationships of the people who wrote these songs). Love is a trial, a dangerous bad thing to happen to anyone. The world is dangerous, confusing, and in the end you'll be hurt badly. The National dress these miserable concepts into finely wrought melodies, gloomy arrangements ranging from simple acoustics to bigger band songs complete with female back-vocals and string-sections. Yes, it is Americana, but of the grown-up-and-very-urban kind. For fans of Calexico, Wilco, and Johnny Cash.

Customer Reviews

Jamie BunkerSad Songs for Dirty Lovers was the first album where The National began to show their true colours and potential for writing, performing and recording great songs. While Alligator and Boxer (since its release) seems to get all of the love within The National's catalogue, Sad Songs should not be discarded due to a lack of hype. Rockers such as "Slipping Husband" and "Murder Me Rachael" rival nearly any counterpart on Alligator and "Lucky You" may be the most beautiful, bittersweet ballad they have written to date.
Sad Songs is definitely worth checking out, especially if you were introduced to the band via either of the previously mentioned masterpieces.
