Sean Na-Na was the alias of indie popster Sean Tillmann, previously of noise rock cult favorites Calvin Krime. Born in Marshall, MN, in 1978, Tillmann was still in his teens when he formed Calvin Krime with singer/guitarist Jon Kelson and drummer Jason Ralph, debuting in 1995 with the EP Pretty in Pink; after returning the following year with Kids Incarcerated, the trio signed to Amphetamine Reptile to issue their first full-length effort, 1997's Dress for the Future. The 11 beautifully crafted songs on MY Majesty paint a portrait of a world where expectations are met and missed in the joyful soup of a messy life. The album is a blur of the careful and the careless, parties and privacy, lonely anthems and uniting ballads. It is full if a singular self-confidence; the confidence that arises when one sees the world clearly for what it is and declares, "Fuck it. I'll do it my way."

Sean Na Na is back in action as a full-time project. Many people might suspect that this is a side project to Har Mar Superstar, but it's actually quite the opposite. 2007 is the year of Sean Na Na. Late last year the band completed recording on what many tastemakers are already saying is the record that will define the new world of American indie rock. Habitually self-referential and vitriolic, Sean Tillman is hell-bent on informing all of the bullies, haters, and girlfriends from his past that he wishes them nothing but ill will, and has left them in the proverbial dust. As if such flaunted malice isn't foreign enough to the usually placid genre of {indie pop} (though the contradictory overtones of insecurity may well be), add to it the fact that [ read more ]
