Sebadoh
As much a collective of musicians as a band, Sebadoh was the quintessential lo-fi band of the '90s. Formed by singer/songwriter Lou Barlow while he was the bassist for Dinosaur Jr. in the late '80s, Sebadoh's music was a virtual catalog of '80s alternative rock and '90s indie rock, featuring everything from jangle pop to noise rock experimentalism. Upon being kicked out of Dinosaur in 1989, Barlow turned his attention toward Sebadoh, a home-recording project that he and drummer/songwriter Eric Gaffney began in 1987. Sebadoh soon developed...[more]

REISSUE. It's hard to call this the shot heard 'round the world, but in its own way, III, along with Slanted And Enchanted, opened up a creative way by ransacking the vestiges of the 80's American underground. The original album is a schizophrenic adventure, from Lou Barlow's plaintive songwriting to Eric Gaffney's noisier psychedelically minded etudes. Long out of print, this landmark album contains the 23-track original album on disc one and a whole album's worth of additional bonus material [ read more ]

Sebadoh was designed as a modern version of the White Album-era Beatles: three singer-songwriters operating under one umbrella, using each other as their respective backing bands. Starting with homemade cassettes and moving on to CDs without bothering to up the recording technology, they became lo-fi heroes, largely on the strength of Lou Barlow's bitter odes to romance. With Bakesale, their fourth full-length album, Sebadoh start playing by more traditional rules, and subsequently reach a muc [ read more ]

Part of Sebadoh's charm is that their records are always rather inconsistent, flipping wildly between sonic extremes as well as musical genres. In a sense, Harmacy is no different than its predecessors, but there are some crucial differences that makes it their most accessible effort. Previously, that title was held by 1994's Bakesale, but in between that record and Harmacy, Lou Barlow had a genuine Top 40 hit with the Folk Implosion's "Natural One." Although nothing on Harmacy sound [ read more ]

Sebadoh made its Sub Pop debut with Smash Your Head on the Punk Rock, which collects the highlights of the import compilations Rockin' the Forest and Sebadoh vs. Helmet. Lou Barlow's contributions are the gems here, especially the transcendent "Brand New Love," which first appeared in acoustic form on Weed Forestin' (and was later punked up by Superchunk); almost as good are "Vampire" and "Good Things," while an apt and poignant cover of David Crosby's {&"Everybody's Been [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. III is a seminal album from Lou Barlow and cohorts. "So there you have it; ridiculously self-aware of its shortcomings, anxieties, and peccadilloes, Sebadoh trudged along anyway, dumping a huge paranormal load on the public's chest in a fearsome display of raw guts and rawer stupidity. III is one of the few landmark releases in independent rock that is celebrated for what it did, rather than what it was. To appreciate it, even to like or love it, you have to hate at le [ read more ]

REISSUE. The Freed Man was one of the first and most crucial releases in the burgeoning lo-fi movement, which would peak in media attention in the mid-90s with the success of Beck, Guided By Voices, and Pavement. But while it helped inspire and define a global movement, there's little trace of that ambition within these tracks. Sebadoh in this incarnation are a cherishably intimate experience. Far removed from the primitivism of the band's early work, III marks a pivotal moment in Sebadoh's creative evolution. The first full-length record to feature Jason Loewenstein, it's a radically diverse affair, offering vastly improved production and a newly-discovered dedication to focused, controlled songcraft; though no two cuts sound even remotely similar, taken as a whole the album is a surpringly cohesive affair. Among the highlights -- and with 23 songs, there are many -- are "The Freed Pig" (Lou Bar [ read more ]
