Now Here Is Nowhere (CD)
Secret Machines are organic, ecstatic, hypnotic, and not a little bit psychedelic. On their debut full-length album, Now Here Is Nowhere, this adventurous trio recalls the warmth of Canadian rockers The Band to Neil Young, the progressiveness of Pink Floyd, Tangerine Dream, and Brian Eno, and the mechanical propulsion of classic Krautrock bands such as Neu and La Dusseldorf. Profoundly, inexplicably magical, Secret Machines will not be a secret for long.![]()

| Before the Secret Machines were David Bowie's favorite band and anointed the darlings of the new prog-rock movement, they released this terrific debut LP, Now Here Is Nowhere. At equal parts epic and quiet sounding, this unassuming album offers an excellent introduction to the Machines' brand of powerful sound-scapes. Rockers such as the opener "First Wave Intact" and "The Road Leads Where Its Lead" build to an explosive frenzy while the slinky "Sad and Lonely" packs a mid tempo wallop with its Neil and Crazy Horse guitars and Jon Bonham drumming. The softer "The Leaves Are Gone" and standout "Pharaoh's Daughter" have a pulsating energy at their core that keeps them at bay of sounding inorganic or overly ethereal. Throughout the proceedings, the production level is top notch. At times it can be hard to believe that this huge wall of sonic layering comes from only three guys. Even during the seemingly empty spaces, there's plenty of whirling and nuanced interplay between this tight trio, especially during their fantastic live performances. Not since Radiohead has a band put forth such a unique and original sound that can only improve with the years ahead. | |

| For a three piece, the Secret Machines sure do make a big sound. Now Here Is Nowhere is a confident mix of driving indie rock guided by ambient keyboards and throbbing percussion. They've been likened to an updated Pink Floyd, but that's mainly because the band has a style that is quite ambitious and refreshing that it's difficult to pin down obvious contemporaries. Let's just say there aren't many current rock acts that could pull off a nine minute opening track so convincingly. Originally from Texas, the band risked financial ruin to move to their adopted home of New York to finish their album with co-producer Jeff Blenkinsopp. The band succeed in creating both sweeping, spatial atmospheres in 'The Leaves Are Gone' as well as killer new wave rock shown best in singles 'Nowhere Again' and 'Light's On'. | |
