2006, Asthmatic Kitty
From Canada's misty Pacific Southwest emerges Shapes and Sizes, fully formed and self-defined, yet redolent with future promise. Shapes and Sizes' melodic pop inhabits a world of beauty, noise, whispers, and elusive, contradictory moods, where the dynamic of a steam piston gives way to elegiac understatement, often within one song. With three of its four members writing
for the band, their repertoire is one of constant surprise, often going out on a limb, but never falling off.

Chris MorinHailed simultaneously for their ability to harness alternating sensitive boy-sweet girl vocals as well as impress indie-stalwart Sufjan Stevens, this Vancouver indie-rock combo might just be on the cusp of some very sweet success. Try out their flagship song, ''Islands Gone Bad'' for a ride on what this band has to offer: male vocals coupled with a female following as well as some pop sensibilities that would make last years buzz, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, agog with some serious time changes that never lose sight of what makes truly great song writing. Emo-ish without resorting to any of the cheap tricks and chicanery that sullies the genre, Shapes and Sizes is some seriously underrated indie-sized rock that deserves to be larger than it is.
