This is Shellac's third full-length, and there are no 12-minute songs on this one. This record is more mean-spirited, plus Todd sings. Recorded throughout 1998 and 1999 at Steve's Electrical Audio studios in Chicago and mastered by Steve Rooke and John Loder at Abbey Road in London. Those of you familiar with Shellac will appreciate how beautiful packaging has always been important to the band, and "1000 Hurts" shows this commitment. It comes enclosed in a cardboard audiotape box.

for anyone that has a common knowledge of music and a decent stereo, new shellac records are always something to get excited about. it's obvious they go far out of their way to give you a quality record with super quality sound. and i don't know if this is some sort of a secret or not, because i knew about this before, but the cd actually comes with the lp. i mean, how many bands would try to prove to you that the vinyl format is one worth considering. as far as the actual record goes itself, there are some pretty decent songs. with the exeption of maybe a hint of experimentation here and there, nothing has really changed much, and that's a good thing. this one rocks with the best of them.

ahh, the new shellac. there isn't a band in the world that produces such honest recordings; they even press their records to 180 gram vinyl so you can hear every little nuance (and mistake even). but production aside, there are some really strong songs on here: the psychotic opener 'prayer to god', the almost butt-rockin 'ghosts', the slint 'tribute' 'shoe song', and the pulsating 'watch song'. however, songs like 'mama gina' and 'new number order' are just kinda pointless and probably would be better off left in the electrical audio vault. the end result: better than 'terraform'(that is no thirteen minute minimalist exercise), but not as good and consistent as 'at action park'.
