1999, Aesthetics
"Boston-based trio The Lune has been making its own brand of jazzy postrock laced with odd time signatures for seven years now. With only a few singles to its credit, Sill marks the band's CD debut for a new label out of Chicago called Aesthetics. The Lune sticks to what it knows best: fashioning disparate rhythms into one fluid piece of work. Taken as a whole, however, Sill is far from a consistent sounding record. "That" kicks things off in a more straightforward rock manner, but then the pace quickly downshifts into a Tortoise-style instrumental, called, inappropriately enough, "The Blues Instrumental." Other instrumentals, like "Seatbelt," with its traditional jazz guitar leanings, would not be out of place at a Holiday Inn piano bar, while "Near The Place Of Asking" exhibits a slight touch of Latin flavor in its percussion and muted guitar upstrokes. The Lune features Brad White, Mark Romano and Jeff Goddard, who, when not playing bass for the Lune, is pulling duty in Karate. This EP should whet the appetites of fans of the band for their full-length, which is scheduled for release in March." -MARK MULLANE (CMJ)
