Silverchair's third full-length release is a confusing affair that reveals a band more talented than their critics realized and more confused than their fans could tolerate. The Australian trio never made any secret of their respect for Nirvana, and on Neon Ballroom Silverchair does one of the best impersonations of their Seattle counterparts on record. It would be easy to convince any Kurt Cobain fan that "Spawn Again" and "Dearest Helpless" are actually In Utero outtakes, and quite good ones at that! When the weepy ballads, like the Goo Goo Dolls-esque "Miss You Love," pull Neon Ballroom into an overtly radio-friendly direction, all the promise of a gritty grunge tribute fades, and Silverchair appears to be serving two masters. The resultingly incongruent musical textures stifled Neon Ballroom and assured a certain amount of fan disenchantment despite the minor airplay success of "Ana's Song (Open Fire)." There are still enough nice moments on this CD to recommend it to even casual fans of the Aussie outfit. Those who had enough of Silverchair when modern rock radio played their mid-'90s hits to death need not concern themselves with this mixed effort. [The Japanese edition features the original version of "Anthem for the Year 2000" as a bonus track.] ~ Vincent Jeffries, All Music Guide

Silverchair is absolutely the best rock band that has come our way for, like, ever. They started out by simply playing great rock music, but then cleverly slipping into the Alternative category with their instrumental music, adding strings and piano and other types of instruments. Not only does the extra sounds make the quality of their music better by 100 fold, but it also shows that they are more than simple-minded young rockers and that they have much more talent than many other one-sound bands. This album is just incredible. No words can describe it's quality. And to all those people who insist on accusing them of ripping off Nirvana, go and ask them why they played music like that and why they decided to start a band in the first place.

Silverchair is the best band ever. I don't understand what's going on with Korn and Limp Bizkit and why everyone seems to like them now. There a white rock band who are trying to rap. I'm glad a good band like silverchair stuck with their rock roots instead of rapping! I know there are strings and a lot of piano in this album, but it actually sounds good! Unlike rapping with a heavy guitar in the background. Anyways "Spawn Again" is still a rock only song, and it's one of the best on the album.

I THINK THAT ANYONE WHO SAYS THAT THIS ALBUM IS BAD HAS SOMETHING SERIOUSLY WRONG WITH THEM. THIS ALBUM BREAKS NEW GROUND IN ROCK MUSIC, ADDING DARK STRINGS AND MUCH MORE THOUGHT-OUT MUSIC. I HAD TO GIVE NEON BALLROOM A 4 STAR BECAUSE THAT IS ALL THIS PAGE ALLOWS BUT IT SHOULD GET A 5 STAR. IT IS ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS OF THE DECADE AND BLOWS AWAY FROGSTOMP AND FREAKSHOW COMBINED INTO ONE. BUY THIS ALBUM I REPEAT BUY THIS ALBUM. ALL IN ALL IT'S THE BEST ALBUM OUT RIGHT NOW.
