Inspired by the East-meets-West solo guitar musings of John Fahey or Robbie Basho, former Plague Lounge guitarist Ben Chasny formed Six Organs of Admittance in 1998 in Northern California. Six Organs' self-titled, self-released debut was released that year, followed by various compilation tracks and obscurities. In 2000, Six Organs released the Manifestation EP on the Ba Da Bing! label, a one-sided clear vinyl-only release consisting of one extended piece (it was reissued by Strange Attractors on CD in 2004 with extra music), and featuring female voc...[more]

Ben Chasny has had a busy 21st century thus far. He's had six new recordings come out since the year 2000 and two others reissued, and he's become a full-time recording and touring member of Comets On Fire. School of the Flower stands somewhere between Compathia and For Octavio Paz, a mysterious, beautifully executed series of airy yet mysterious vocal and instrumental songs that put Chasny's elliptical guitar playing front and center (as has become the norm, he also plays organ and sin   [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. Shelter From The Ash features a most fluid combination of electric and acoustic Six Organs of Admittance styles. Chasny went into the studio with the songs both in his mind and also demoed out, a different way of working than in previous sessions. Sure, improvisations were still a big part of the sound; within the song structures, they create dynamic sparks from the other side of the inspiration. Additionally (if you must know), standard tuning played a part for the first time in histor   [ read more ]

Dark Noontide is the third full-length release from Six Organs of Admittance. While listeners were pleasantly surprised by Ben Chasny's out-of-nowhere acid-folk genius on earlier releases, Dark Noontide comes in a notch or two higher with another spectacular merging of dreamy, hypnotic, finger-picked melodies and psychedelia concrète, not to mention some very fine fuzz guitar. Eight incredible tracks seamlessly blend powerful blues foot-stomp, backward interludes, strange strings feedback, dar   [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. Through dark days and glowing nights, Six Organs of Admittance continues to step to the far rim of the world with purposeful strides. Indeed, new horizons are visible throughout Luminous Night. Be it in the face of spiritual crisis or catharsis, Ben Chasny as Six Organs refuses to stagnate, or to evolve in predictable fashion; in response, he keeps moving on. This is the first Six Organs of Admittance album with such a lengthy gap between it and its former number.

Limited edition reissue of Dust & Chimes by Six Organs of Admittance, Ben Chasny's second amazing, underground folk-psych project from behind California's Redwood curtain. Heavy acoustic guitar and mumbled vocalizations merge with out-there jamming in a style that's been compared to guys on Takoma (though Dust & Chimes is actually closer to the first two TRex albums). After a brief, textural opening, Dust and Chimes rekindles the aplomb of "Visnu" with a mortal vs. guitar death dance ca   [ read more ]

Since the release of Six Organs of Admittance's self-titled debut in 1998, Ben Chasny has played pure guitar within individual songs. But "For Octavio Paz" is his first full record where he explores the guitar inside and out, solo and over-dubbed, steel and nylon string (in fact, "For Octavio Paz" is the first Six Organs album to feature the reverberations of a nylon string guitar). What really sets Chasny apart from other modern Fahey worshipers is that Chasny's pantheon is willing to accept a wider array    [ read more ]

Rare 1998 LP reissued on CD with two rarer bonus tracks, all on CD for the first time In 1998 Ben Chasny self-released an LP of his "acoustic based project[ions]" under the name Six Organs of Admittance. The resulting five-song LP is a masterpiece of diverse elements using acoustic and electric guitars, a detuned violin, organ, electronics and koto. The material covers a lot of ground: there's an acid folk duet, an epic, three-part space suite, and two short concrète-like pieces that entice hidden memor   [ read more ]
