Sleater-Kinney

ARTIST MAINARTIST INFORELATED ARTISTSLINKSREVIEWS

The anthemic Olympia, WA-based punk trio Sleater-Kinney formed from the ashes of Heavens to Betsy and Excuse 17, a pair of groups that rode the first wave of the riot grrrl movement. Singer/guitarists Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein first met in 1992, when Tucker was one half of the duo Heavens to Betsy; Brownstein, a classically trained pianist, was so inspired by Tucker and other grrrl musicians like Bikini Kill and Bratmobile (not coincidentally Tucker's own influences) that she formed her own band, Excuse 17, a year later. {$...[more]

Insound Staff Pick - 2008! Sleater-Kinney is a three-piece rock and roll combo from the wilds of Portland, Oregon, made up of the dual and dueling guitars and voices of Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein, and the insistent and inventive drumming of Janet Weiss. The Woods (as in deepest, darkest; operating in dim corners of the heart and mind, both a physical reality and an emotional place) is the title of the new Sleater-Kinney album. It's their seventh full-length release and first for Sub Po   [ read more ]

Sleater-Kinney makes the connection better than any band I can think of -- and they have never done it more strongly than on the excellent One Beat. The album retains the trademark layered sound of earlier work, the dueling guitars, the wailing vocals, the powerfully musical drumming, yet it plunges into much darker territory than before. All Hands on the Bad One made political statements about gender roles and consumerism, but never asked the   [ read more ]

They're back -- bigger and badder than ever before. The red-hot and raging rock 'n' roll juggernaut Sleater-Kinney charge up their engines and deliver another smoking album of three-woman-powered rawk. A jubilant and rollicking jam-kicker that leaves the introspection behind and heads full force for the good times.

Sleater-Kinney's masterful sophomore effort Call the Doctor fulfills all the promise of the group's debut and more, forging taut melodicism and jaw-dropping sonic complexity out of barbed-wire emotional potency. The emergence of Carrie Brownstein as an equal shareholder in Corin Tucker's vision is the key -- her four contributions (particularly "Stay Where You Are" and "I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone") are stellar, while her harmonies complete Tucker's equally superb lead turns by reading    [ read more ]

Sleater-Kinney's debut reocrd is a medium-fi blast of thrashy riot-grrl rock. Some tracks are reminscient of 90's Sonic Youth ("Be Yr Mama"). While others are just a punk blast of angst ("A Real Man"). The group suffers for excessive monotone melody lines, but suceeds in making this reviewer uncomfortable in being male. The group showcases a promising understanding of dynamics, and they are certainly confident. This is a good first record, and a showcase for talent that would later blossom on albums such as   [ read more ]
