VINYL FORMAT. Song of Zarathustra formed in March of 1997, shortly after Trever left Shortwave Channel (featuring Russell and Michelle of CAMERA OBSCURA). During the first year of their existence, Song of Zarathustra recorded three singles and toured the USA twice. Relocation brought a hiatus during which Trever moved to Oakland, forming The Kill in Me. Meanwhile, Travis and James formed The Book of Dead Names and released a bunch of records. After regrouping in March 2000, Song of Zarathustra recorded their Troubleman debut. Their sound is hard to describe accurately. Many people refer to Song of Zarathustra as Camera Obscura's "little brother," since the bands are best friends and they have played in bands together in the past. Plus, they have similar sounds, except Song of Zarathustra is more goth where Camera Obscura is more noise. With Camera Obscura moving to Minneapolis (Song of Zarathustra's hometown), the cycle is complete. Song of Zarathustra's takes the anger in hardcore and mixes it with a cannon-like drum machine (as well as a live drummer), making an odd mixture of goth/industrial, thrash, as well as Neurosis-esque 'doom' breaks. They are one of the loudest bands on Troubleman, and they're a rad band to see live. People have called them a mixture of Drive Like Jehu and VSS. Either way, they have a new take on the otherwise tired genre.
